Summary

Shows chunk and tile grids around the player.
Designed for radar placement where its chunk location is important, and for OCD players who want to achieve perfect blueprint alignments.

Introduction

Vanilla game already provides visualization to chunks and tiles, through debug option "show-tile-grid". However, too many black lines make the screen too dark (to my taste). They are also a bit excessive, as the most (if not all) building placements are done very close to the player character.

This mod provides a more compact and customizable visualization.
Under "Options" → "Mod settings" → "Per Player", there are a few options on tile and chunk grids. So users can pick a combination to provide enough guide lines to get the job done, while not obscuring the screen too much.

Tile grids:

  • 32×32 (Every tile)
  • 16×16
  • 8×8
  • 4×4
  • 2×2
  • 1×1 (Chunk border)

Chunk grids:

  • NONE
  • 4-Neighbourhood
  • 8-Neighbourhood

There are also several options available, for choosing the conditions when the chunk grids will be shown. This includes when "Alt-mode", holding item stack, ghost, blueprint, or cursor buildable only.

Combining the smaller grids with customizable conditions, only minimal rendering is needed. Hence this mod offers rather minimal impact to FPS.

Chunk

"Chunk" is a concept used in Factorio to divide the world surface into sections, defined as a 32×32 tiles block. (See official Wiki for more details.)
For casual gameplay, it is okay for players to completely ignore their presence. However, chunks play a important role, if you go serious and want to plan the base carefully, such as radar coverage and pollution controls.

Known Issues

  • Holding ghost items does not trigger on_player_cursor_stack_changed on 1.0 nor before (works for 1.1). Thus such option is only available from version 1.1.0 onwards.
  • Holding blueprint book does not trigger on_player_cursor_stack_changed (although work for blueprint or other ghosts), nor its contents is readable at all if in blueprint storage. So blueprint books has to be skipped at the moment (1.1.32).
