g Gold deposits do not generate on the surface

As I explored the map in ever-widening circles, I noticed that I hadn’t come across a gold deposit, and my gold reserves from core mining are dwindling more and more

Is it correct that these deposits don’t appear, and that gold must be obtained through core mining, or by using copper and aqua regia, or by filtering dirty water only?

I checked this by revealing 2k of terrain using cheats in versions 2.4 and 2.6

You are correct with your conclusions. Gold shouldn't appear on Nauvis. Due to a bug in Space Exploration that doesn't get an official fix somehow, it also doesn't spawn on other planets. There is a janky fix for it though: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/se_mod_resource_spawner
