What is the logic of metal casting if it is not profitable both in terms of resources and energy? Why is it needed at all?

^^ I did the same math on a piece of paper just a minute ago when I saw your post.
It seems that Iron purification gives a greater benefit. You'll get 10 iron ingots from 5 iron chunks by purification.
With smelting and casting only 7,5 from 5 iron chunks.

It turns out that casting is extremely unprofitable.

Will assess i/o ratios and giving the Arc furnace / Plasma heater / Caster smelting productivity technologies.

Purification itself provides great benefit particularly after getting through some of its 30+ productivity tech and using the dirty water for fluorine or otherwise.
