b [2.0.25] Cannot Zoom Out since Factorio 2.0.23

Awesome mod, can't think of playing without it anymore.

I noticed that since the last update, pressing "m" in the Sandbox to access the map view is no longer possible though.

This is purposefully not possible since 2.0. Map view gives full cheating access to all other planets and platforms, so it cannot be allowed.

Can you provide a way to zoom out at least?
I'm working on large designs/layouts and not being able to zoom out to see the whole thing makes selecting it to make a Blueprint extremely painful.

It also eliminates the use of the Sandbox to have multiple different designs spread around to compare

I'm sorry, but no. This is not a simple fix. There is a much larger set of changes related to 2.0 that are still not complete or fully planned yet, and you will simply have to wait for that and/or Wube to implement modder's feedback.

I was initially confused by the original post since it referenced m for the Map View, which was actually disabled in 2.0, yet it said "since the last update" which implied something much more recent than 2.0. I now see from the influx of posts and Factorio's most recent update that it meant something else: it has historically been possible to zoom out into the charting view while in the Sandboxes, but Factorio 2.0.23 changed that.

Wube said that update "Improved the behavior of god controller." There's nothing I can do about that. If you want the old behavior back, go petition Wube to undo their improvements.

Did you open a bug report for it ?

It's not a bug, and no I haven't. If you want them to change it, then you can do so, and petition more users for input too.

Found something... If you click on the logistic button (or L), the map opens !

But the overlays are cumbersome.

Edited after reading another thread.

As you stated, the change factorio made today to the God controller today seems to have broken zooming out to a "map" type overview. Hitting L is a passable workaround for the time being. I hope the previous behavior / ability to fully zoom out is eventually restored, the mod is significantly clunkier without it.

Hitting L is a passable workaround for the time being (thankfully we can still copy/paste in that view, otherwise the entire blueprint sandbox would be incredibly hamstrung).

I hope the previous behavior / ability to fully zoom out is eventually restored, it significantly improves the sandbox experience, the way I have my sandbox setup it's basically unusable in the current state.

Thanks for your response! And yes, my fault, i did not express myself correctly. What I meant was to actually zoom out as PiggyWhiskey requested.
And thanks for clearing it up, so that's what happened.

Is there a topic on forums (or somewhere else) where this issue was brought up? I couldn't find any. Please, someone who can explain the details of the issue properly, create a topic so that others can come and vouch for it.

I posted a topic in the suggestions forum, it's pending mod approval. Not sure if it works yet but here's the link:

FYI - in the meantime you can right click on factorio in steam, select properties, betas, 2.0.22 - Factorio Experimental.

This will roll you back a version but you can zoom out again. FYI - it will only be compatible with saves from before you updated to 2.0.23

As a final thought on this - would there be any potential for having some kind of option to NOT disable map view within the sandbox?

I know you said it was disabled as there was the potential it could be used to cheat in multiplayer, but I'm guessing the vast majority of players play single player, it seems odd such a critical feature is disabled due to a pretty narrow issue.

Would be great if there was an on-startup-option to allow map view so those of us in single player or who aren't as worried about cheating can retain the map function/features in the sandbox.

It's not that simple, and even though I'm working towards it, there's no guarantee that it will happen.

Hm... weird things happens on my installation. Like described above Zoom out dosent work anymore... so far so bad. BUT... i build some train stations and played around with this... and sometimes after that my Zoom is working again. And jea... i mean not logistig or train view... normal map zoom like before. but i cant reproduce this troustly. Realy strange.

I have a couple updates for expectations. Directly on topic, the "zoom out to chart/map" behavior of the God-controller was restored in Factorio 2.0.25 (still experimental).

Related to this, I've made enough progress towards allowing the Remote View that I can say it's highly likely that it will be released in a short time-frame. So, you will end up with both options: simply zooming out, and using most of the Remote View's functionality.

I would say 90% users simply dont care about the so called "cheat", except who run PVP servers. Quickly making some designs inside the lab and paste them outside, there is no more or less than that. At least the server host should have an option to toggle it. I see no reason why forcing users unable to use it.

Every people I know who use the mod complainted to me the disabled remote view problem, and somebody planned to make another mod forcing enabling remote view again. This mod is designed for ease people's life, not for making things hard.

This key value of this mod is to avoid opening another client in editor mod and pasting the designs to the main game your are playing. helping players in public servers enjoying their lives. Sorry for you still no seeing it and against your users.

If you really think this is a really awesome big thing you feel pride of, then good luck for your career. Personnally I wont even spend of my time commenting on project of this complexity and scope, if I am not a user of it. I know you do make a lot of efforts in it but truth is truth.

I make this reply as you simply delete my previous post days ago, so you deserve it. At that time I already know what you are. Glad to see your response this way.

You have essentially zero understanding of the problems, or solutions, involved with this mod. You do not know what you are talking about, yet you speak as if you do. You see no reason, not because it's unreasonable, but because you are unqualified.

I will not tolerate your attitude. You don't have to use this mod. I am not obligated to do anything for you. You are lucky to benefit from the fact that I publish this mod. It is absolutely unreasonable that you would respond in such a manner.

I will allow respectful, fruitful, and harmless discussions. I will begin removing posts that do not meet this criteria.
