i Fuckin' maglevs, how do they work?

(updated 4 months ago)

I've been slowly converting over my trains to maglev trains, and one of the STUPIDEST components to them is these maglev batteries. Not only does it make no sense, and are absolutely abhorrent to deal with, but logically it makes NO SENSE!

https://www.energy.gov/articles/how-maglev-works

"Maglev trains are “driven” by the powered guideway. The vehicles have to move where the network sends them. That’s basic physics."

The RAILS are what need to be powered, not the trains themselves. Which the rails do have a power node attached to them for some reason but don't pull any power from the network to operate. Which again makes no sense.

I would've posted this on the maglev's mod page, but it seems dead. Several threads posted in the past month with 0 replies from the author.

I confess I know nothing about MAGLEVs, I just liked the feel of these trains and thought it made sense as a reward.

I don't know how to go about this. Making no sense is not the biggest problem (it's a question of suspension of disbelief, which a factorio player does all the time), what worries me is you're saying it's not fun, could you tell me more about the frustrating part of them?

I'm not against trying to make it so the train is only accelerating if it's powered by the network, which would basically forces you to use neodymium rails, since they have integrated poles. No idea if that's possible to add (without ups-heavy code at least)

The biggest problem is Aquilo. There's no way to deal with the exploded batteries other than just sending them back onto the platform for reprocessing and then dispatch them back down, but automating it is a pain in the ass. I have to deliver 100 batteries to the platform, and then wait until I have 100, because otherwise I'm wasting a rocket on a planet that has no generatable resources. Meanwhile, there is no reliable way to interrupt the platform to only dispatch it to each planet that needs it, I have to make it run on a schedule, or have it float above Aquilo exclusively, which is stupid because it does need to move and interrupt the schedule for its own circuit reasons.

The suspension of belief is one thing, but it doesn't fit into the Factorio style. Bar fusion (which just doesn't make sense at all how they've implemented it, the biggest problem with fusion is that it takes more energy to get the fusion reactor started than it would ever produce), but everything does at least jive somewhat with something from reality. Koverax processing is similar to Plutonium breeding, nuclear reactors have to consume their entire fuel cell (rod in a can?) before they can shutdown, that's true too. Ammoniacal solutions are theorized to make good fuel, it just doesn't solve the problem petroleum based fuels cause, which is burning them causes pollution. All the ammo in the game is based on real equivalents. A firearm round is just a regular 9MM round. Piercing round is FMJ. Uranium rounds are DU rounds. Piercing shotgun is slugs. Railguns do exist, we just can't figure out a way to deliver them enough power to make it feasible.

Anyway, you get my point. It just doesn't make any sense that the train itself needs any power at all.

IDK, if I was to spitball a solution, maybe make the exploded batteries recyclable? Holmium plate and super conductors are constantly required on Aquilo.

EDIT: Wait are you saying the maglevs can run on regular train tracks and don't require neodymium rails? THAT'S A BUG YO! Maglevs work by !!!!MAGNETS!!!! Regular train track is made of just common steel, which is ferrous but not a magnetitic enough to levitate the train. (Get it? Magnetic Levitation?)

Sounds to me like the simplest solution here would be to rename the train in localisation to something that doesn't say "maglev", then.

ITS A GAME! IF YOU NEDD REAL PHYSICS GO IN REAL LIFE :D

It very much is, when the author has directly told you they aren't prioritising realism. Not to mention, your issue is with Electric Trains, which are a dependency mod made by another person, near as I can tell. Like I said before - your issue is purely cosmetic and can be fixed by simply changing the train's localisation string and nothing else.

No it's not, because it's not addressing the core issue of the fact it doesn't fit into the Factorio pattern, where it has to be grounded in at least some reality. My issue is that Moshine produces neodymium which is a magnetic material. Either strike neodymium entirely from the mod to fit into the Factorio pattern and rename the trains poopy fast trains because tesla coils or force the cohesion between maglev train and maglev rails and remove the battery mechanic.

"Fitting into the Factorio pattern" is not a requirement to post a mod on the portal. A few minutes ago, I ran into a mod which replaces the Engineer character model with Hatsune Miku in a bathing suit. Igrys is a planet focused on "magic-powered science". Maybe I'm biased because I made the Alchemistry mod for generating ores out of "unstable isotope", but I see nothing wrong with mods getting a few scientific facts wrong or entirely departing from Vanilla. That's what modding is all about - you grab the mods you like and ignore the ones you don't.

Electrified rails are not possible in Factorio - not without a lot of runtime script ugliness. That's just not a thing that's going to happen. But if you really want that... Maybe take your requests to the the actual SE Space Trains mod that you're actually discussing. If you want changes to the SE Space Train, those would have to be done to the SE Space Train mod.

Maybe learn how to read?

So you're one of those people, eh? I'd say "good luck getting your request fulfilled with this attitude", but you're literally making requests for a mod on another mod's page. So yeah, good luck with that, I guess. For future reference, though - if you're wondering why people disregard your opinion and ignore your comments, it's this. This is why. You can be a jerk, or you can negotiate changes with mod makers, but you can't do both.

Yet again you can't fucking read. It's filed under suggestions and ideas, not a bug report.

Yes, a suggestion which was already rejected by the mod maker. You proceed to devolve into profanity and whine about it, but it's not going to change anything. But by all means - feel free to maintain your histrionics if you feel they'll make a difference.

Cope and seethe.

Cope and seethe.

You're projecting. What am I coping with? You ran into a mod maker who was nice enough to not tell you "no" straight-up, but that answer is tantamount to a "no". But hey, I guess cope and seethe in hopes of getting your way. Doesn't seem like either of us has anything better to do with our time.

You can't read, thus are coping and seething.

Do you maybe think you're trolling me, reposting the same thing over and over again? I tried to offer a bit of perspective, you responded with what amounts to "loud noises". Do you want to have the last word? Would that make you happy? Because I can do that if you'd it'll sate your ego and drop your blood pressure.

I'm doing something to make you reply each time, so it's working.

OK, that clears that up, then. You never actually cared about Maglev technology or "fitting into the Factorio pattern". You just needed someone to talk to, presumably someone who'll be upset about your tone. Glad to have provided. Tell you what - why don't you have the last word? I'll let you, honest. Go head, come up with the best schoolyard taunt you can and lay it on me. I'll retreat in shame and defeat. You can walk away feeling good about yourself, and everyone leaves happy. That sound like fun?

I did care at first, but then screaming mc scream said "LOL VIDEO GAMES" to which I said that's not an argument and then you coped and seethed that his nonsense was somehow an argument, so I figured I'd use the better part of my morning to see how far I can waste your time as much as you're wasting mine, and so far, what are we an hour into this? Consider that a win.
