人类“阿特拉斯殖民计划”在穆叶情星系扎根，五大殖民星球各司其职，孕育着跨星球文明的希望，却遭遇星际虫族的毁灭性入侵。除新地星外，祝融星、句芒星、雷神星、玄冥星均被虫族摧毁，沦为破碎星球，星系边缘也成为危险无人区。新地星凭借星云屏障和完善的殖民基地得以残存，却也难逃虫族入侵，幸存人类退守偏远区域，陷入“固守必亡”的绝境。为求生存，人类需在新地星一边搭建工场、发展工业，一边构筑防御、对抗随工业污染不断进化的虫族；同时，需借助残存日志的信息，建造太空飞船，穿越星系边缘，抵达各破碎星球附近，采集小行星上的特色资源（钨、生物资源、废料、锂等），用于升级工业与科技。这场求生之战中，玩家作为幸存者领袖，将主导工业建设、虫族防御与太空探索，决定人类能否在破碎星海中延续文明、清除虫族威胁。
