I have noticed the same thing. I just started up a run and without access to iron you can't make the iron gears for the inserter parts. I've tried to make a quick edit to let you make iron gears from wooden gears and iron plates but I've never made one before and it's giving me trouble. Would like to know if anyone else has already made a patch or if one is in the works.
