Need formic acid as the only way to make latex slabs to make science pack 1s, but the technology for it (pictured above) is locked behind science pack 2s. Am I missing something?

Dont worry - you can make it. In early game you get formic acid from Vrauk. On this screenshot i see it in the "Alternative recipes" row (should be called something like "render vrauk").
