Is there a single player mode?
No, there is not and it is not planned.
Is this compatible with mod X or Y?
No, Biter Clash is basically a scenario (like official PvP scenario) not a mod for normal Factorio gameplay. While many mods can technically work with Biter Clash it will likely result in negative experience.
