🌐Planet Rubia

Discover the wind planet Rubia. Belts and inserters work differently on Rubia, leading to unique building challenges not seen on any other planet. Your whole factory must go with the wind as a never-ending barrage of waste is hurled at your base.

i [Resolved] Asteroid mechanics

Rubia is the 10th planet I've added to my current run. It's very interesting and I think there are a lot of things it does well. The main issue I have is with the asteroid mechanics. I was playing on "Normal" difficulty (didn't see there was an option at first).

The way asteroids randomly appear, disappear, or just randomly explode for no reason is a bit confusing. Initially, I was wondering if the shields were some kind of bug caused by another mod I'm using. I think I understand now that they're working as intended. I saw a comment on a post here about them dropping a shield entity.

My main complaint/suggestion is that I feel that there should be some way to passively defend without turrets. In particular, the fact that an entity completely surrounded by craptonite walls can still be destroyed seems a bit unfair to me. I did manage to complete Operation Iron Man but I struggled with getting things automated, so it was a lot of toil. When I left my base turrets ran out and it started getting destroyed very quickly.

I haven't fully completed the tech tree so I may be missing some kind of solution further down. I also realize that it's definitely possible to automate defenses, either with gun turrets or presumably lasers as well.

My eventual solution was to pack everything up, create a space platform, and launch the valuable stuff I had imported from other planets. I'll definitely be coming back to Rubia when I'm more ready to devote time to it.

So, two suggestions:
1. More information in the Rubia briefing about the asteroids, specifying that they can spawn anywhere, that they have shields, and that they sometimes disappear or blow up randomly.
2. Consider some kind of encasement where a building can be made completely safe from the trashsteroids. Maybe as a balancing thing it makes the building completely un-usable.

Thanks!

Thank you for posting. I am glad you enjoyed your time on Rubia.

No. The point of trashsteroids being destructible only by ammo-requiring turrets is a design choice to force the player to deal with belt logistics across their Rubia base. This forces more interaction with Rubia’s core mechanic (wind). This is also described in my FAQ.

When I left my base turrets ran out and it started getting destroyed very quickly.

Properly automating ammo production and distribution logistics is core to Rubia. It sounds like you buffered ammunition without automating it properly. Rubia is designed intentionally to punish this to force you to find a proper long-term solution to trashsteroids.

More information in the Rubia briefing about the asteroids

Details are fully explained in the “Trashsteroid mechanics” Tips and Tricks entry, which pops up upon completing the Amateur Biorecycling technology.

I may be missing some kind of solution further down.

Sniper turrets are the main intended solution.
