No life means no coal, oil, wood, biters, or free oxygen, requiring varied renewable energy sources. For reliability, you'll focus on abundant elements from the air, sea, or common minerals such as iron ore, bauxite, sandstone, and limestone. Advanced technology enables asteroid mining of rarer elements.

Building a large assembler requires a large assembler. I did not start with one, so there's no way to ever make any.

This extends to other early-ish buildings like a floatation cells.

If anyone else gets stuck like this, I bootstrapped myself with:

You can hand craft a large assembler, if you have the materials.

i had a weird bug where i couldn't handcraft anything, and it was a conflict with another mod. i'd try disabling some.

Oh bizarre. It's possible I could improve that a bit by setting the character's crafting abilities in a later pass, in hopes that whatever mod that is is doing it earlier. If you happen to figure out what mod it was, I'd be curious to know for testing purposes.
