i About Pelagos

First of all, I'd like to apologize — my English isn't very good, so I wrote this in Korean and used an AI translation. I hope you'll bear with me.

This thread isn't about a bug or a gameplay issue, so please feel completely free to ignore it if you'd prefer.

Recently there seems to have been a dispute between Talandar99, the author of Planet Pelagos, and TriggeredSnake.

The author of that mod insists the tech tree changes and surface limitations are vital to his mod. Someone made a tweaks mod to undo the changes, and he marked the tweak mod incompatible.

This is something you wrote yourself in a thread not long ago, so I imagine you're already aware of the situation.

In response to that, TriggeredSnake forked Talandar99's mod and published it on the portal as a separate mod. Talandar99 has reacted with considerable anger, describing the fork as "stealing." There was a brief argument in the thread, and it even touched on legal matters, but beyond that the two sides simply aren't showing much respect for one another. What's certain is that the atmosphere in the modding community around this isn't a healthy one.

Honestly, I don't think this is something you, as the author of Cargo Ships, necessarily need to concern yourself with. But when I think about who holds the decisive — and moral — right in this matter, it seems to me that it's you alone.

So I wanted to ask: what are your thoughts?

Would you prefer that your mod not be restricted by someone else, and that players be able to use its features starting from Nauvis?

Or do you feel that, out of consideration for another mod author whose work helped bring Cargo Ships to a wider audience, it's acceptable for players to experience the original design intent and its fun somewhat later in the game?

I don't claim to know what's right, but I do think this matter could be settled by your decision.

If it's the former, Talandar99 could end up being prevented from using your mod; if it's the latter, TriggeredSnake could end up being prevented from using it.

Of course, you may simply have no interest in this discussion at all, and taking no action is also perfectly reasonable (at least, that's how it appears to me, and I don't mean to suggest that would be a problem).

I'm not arguing that any particular choice is the correct one — I'm just curious about your opinion.

It's possible this has already been discussed somewhere like Discord, but I wasn't able to find any such conversation myself.

Thank you for your time, and thank you for all your work on this mod.

My previous post answered all your questions already if you read it carefully. In case there is a language barrier, here is a more direct answer:

  1. I am not the author, only the most active maintainer of Cargo Ships.
  2. My only goal is to keep Cargo Ships from being forked so that no one sends me bug reports for bugs in a fork that I already fixed on the original.
  3. The moment I add an arbitrary incompatibility flag to Cargo Ships, there will be five new forks of it posted. I don't understand why you think I have any influence over either Talandar or Snake.
  4. I have no moral stake in this argument. As long as Snake respects the GPLv3 of the original Pelagos, there is nothing worth talking about. One could ask whether Talandar is actually allowed to relicense their GPLv3 code as CC-BY-NC-ND at all, maybe they are, but I don't care to learn the specifics.
  5. This is a game, I don't get paid to write mods so modding is also a game to me. I'm only here because modding is less stressful than my day job as an engineer, and I'm not going to let anyone change that for me.

Thank you for your reply.

First, there was a misunderstanding on my part. The original author is schnurrebutz — but I mistakenly thought that person had simply changed their username to robot256. It hadn't occurred to me that you were the maintainer.

After seeing your note that the questions had already been answered, I searched through the threads more carefully and found the post from seven months ago. I could see that my question was completely pointless, and that my failure to find your earlier answer was entirely due to my own laziness and carelessness.

I now realize the question itself was a mistake. In that thread seven months ago, you'd already dealt with more than enough of the emotional side of this issue, and here I was, picking at it all over again.

I'm truly sorry. I'd like to delete the thread itself, but it turns out I can't.

Thank you once again for your reply and for all your hard work. I'll leave it there.

Thank you.
