Py Cold Chain Logistics

Refrigeration and cold-chain logistics for Factorio 2.1, with Pyanodons and PyHardMode compatibility.

This mod adds ways to preserve spoilable items throughout your factory, from individual storage containers to rail transport and automated production lines.

This project draws on the development history of several Cold Chain Logistics projects:

  • LightningMaster's original Fridge, which introduced the refrigeration mechanics and cold-chain infrastructure.
  • PyBren's Py Cold Chain Logistics, which adapted the original mod for Pyanodons.
  • Kabury's Cold Chain Rework, a subsequent Py-focused fork with additional balancing ideas and compatibility work.

This is an independent fork and continuation project.
It is not an official collaboration, and it is not endorsed by LightningMaster, Kabury, or other upstream contributors unless explicitly stated.

This release is my own amalgamation of code, fixes, compatibility work, and ideas drawn from those projects. The current version uses the newer upstream Fridge implementation, adds compatibility work for Pyanodons and PyHardMode, and includes migration support for saves coming from Cold Chain Rework.

Features

  • Refrigerators: Slow item spoilage by 20× by default, with a configurable preservation rate.
  • Logistic refrigerators: Passive-provider, requester and buffer variants for automated logistics.
  • Freezing warehouses: Large, powered storage that stops item spoilage while operating.
  • Preservation wagons: Refrigerated cargo transport.
  • Preservation inserters: Keep spoilable items fresh while they're held by inserters.
  • Space Age support: Freezing cargo bays and unloading bays when Space Age is enabled.
  • Performance improvements: A workload-balanced preservation scheduler designed to avoid large processing spikes in bigger factories.

Pyanodons and PyHardMode compatibility

The mod inherits storage capacities from corresponding Pyanodons or vanilla entities, including the reductions introduced by PyHardMode.

For example, when PyHardMode reduces a steel chest to 20 slots and a Py warehouse to 120 slots, the corresponding refrigerated containers use those capacities.

Storage sizes are read directly from the other mods rather than maintained as separate, hardcoded balancing values.

The intention is to preserve Pyanodons' progression and difficulty, not simplify its recipes or research requirements.

Compatibility and saves

  • Supports Factorio 2.1.
  • Tested with Pyanodons and PyHardMode.
  • Includes prototype migrations to help preserve content when switching from Cold Chain Rework.
  • Back up existing saves before changing between forks or major versions.

Origins and credits

This mod exists because of the work of several authors and contributors:

LightningMaster — Original creator
Created Cold Chain Logistics (Fridge), including the original refrigeration mechanics, storage buildings, and preservation infrastructure.

PyBren — Pyanodons adaptation and mod maintenance
Created Py Cold Chain Logistics to make refrigeration available in a Pyanodons playthrough, and maintains this mod portal listing.

Kabury — Cold Chain Rework
Created Cold Chain Rework, a subsequent fork with Pyanodons compatibility changes, alternative recipe balancing, and performance-oriented changes.

Upstream Fridge contributors
Contributed subsequent preservation features, fixes, and improvements that informed or were incorporated into this release.
