Mineral Chemistry
Metals are not typically found as a raw metal, but instead as a salt, with the metal bound to a non metal or group of non metals. Here, Copper and Iron are found as a sulfide (FeS,CuS), oxide (Fe2O3, CuO), and a carbonate (FeCO3,Cu2CO3(OH)2). Processing these ores often produces slag/gangue - a waste product that must be destroyed to keep the factory running. You destroy slag/gangue with fluorine chemistry - which can be very dangerous. Stone asteroids are also included.
Using this mod
This mod was originally part of the processing chain with semi-procedural systems. Where you have to mix and match parts of this chemistry to process ores on a far away planet. You can add this to existing saves - but the ores won't spawn. This mod provides both an architecture to inherit for other planets to use, and a new Nauvis experience. The processing in the mod doesn't care if you get access to infinite materials in space-age. Later versions will have settings to toggle how to handle integrating into asteroid and Vulcanus processing chains. As this mod is also chemistry mod that is meant to be inherited, all of the setting for a complex ore play through are DISABLED by default. ENABLE them in the mod settings.
Mod options
- This mod won't spawn the new ores on Nauvis unless you allow it to in the mod settings.
- It is up to the player to balance native copper and iron ore generation. You will need some easy iron and copper to get production started.
- I suggest you native copper ore and iron ore down to 10% - but I don't impose this.
- I suggest you check jump start to chemical science in the mod settings. This is expert level mod.
- There is also an option to boost the starting materials. It is a modest boost.
New ores
- There are two variants to each mineral ore - normal and rough. Rough ores must be concentrated into their normal counterparts. Fluorite has no rough counterpart.
-covellite=CuS
-hematite=Fe2O3
-malachite=Cu2CO3(OH)2
-pyrite=FeS
-siderite=FeCO3
-tenorite=CuO
-fluorite=CaF2
-covellite_rough=Ore with poor concentration of CuS
-hematite_rough=Ore with poor concentration of Fe2O3
-malachite_rough=Ore with poor concentration of Cu2CO3(OH)2
-pyrite_rough=Ore with poor concentration of FeS
-siderite_rough=Ore with poor concentration of FeCO3
-tenorite_rough=Ore with poor concentration of CuO
New buildings
- Dangerous fluorination plant - Used to get rid of slag, perform fluorine chemistry, and pressure wash rough ores. Red skin of cryogenic plant
- Blast furnace - takes reductive fuel (New fuel type, made from carbon and solid fuel.) Used to convert oxides (hematite and tenorite) into iron ore and copper ore. Also capable of normal smelting. Has 2.3 speed and 10% native productivity bonus. There are multiple new recipes to generate carbon for this fuel.
- Froth floatation plant - Frankstein of a chemical plant and a storage tank. By me. Used to perform froth floatation - concentrate rough ores into froth which ores can be recovered from
Chemisty? Never heard of her
- Oxidative and Reductive smelting - Smelt FeCO3 into Fe2O3. Use the blast furnace to convert Fe2O3 to iron ore. Heat can be used to convert sulfides and carbonate to oxides
- Saponification - Dilute sulfuric acid and light oil to get glycerol and fatty acids
- Glycerol can then be converted into plastic, fuel or carbon. It is slightly used as frother to make bubbles for froth floatation
- Charcolation - Glycerol, petroleum gas, wood, fatty acids, and solid fuel can be burned completely to produce carbon.
- Sulfate chemistry. Pressure oxidation can be done in the chemical plant. Convert all mineral ores into sulfate solutions with sulfuric acid, which can then be forcibly reduced to the ores. Both rough and normal ores can processed into sulfate solutions.
- Hydraulic pressure washing. Convert rough ores into normal ores and make a whole lot of pollution from letting the waste water run off.
- Non platinum based sulfur chemistry - pressure oxidation , imported from Corrundum. Note that while hydrogen-sulfide is included as a fluid. I do not include a crafting recipe to make it here.
- Fluorine chemistry. Fluorite is a very common mineral on Earth. So it gets added to Nauvis if you enable it. Now there are safe recipes, and recipes that make a big boom. Fluorine isn't a joke and it will kill you.
Me no understand chemistry
- Pressure oxidation - sulfuric acid everything, then reduce iron and copper from sulfate solutions
- Reductive smelting. Oxide to metal. Non oxide to oxide. Normal smelting = oxidative smelting.
- Charcolation - burn things to get carbon for reductive smelting.
- Saponification - Turn light oil into soap to make plastic and a component for froth flotation
- Froth flotation - Oil floats on water. Use this to make the good part of the ore go with the "oil"(fatty acid) layer. Then recovery ore in chemical plant.
- Hydraulic pressure washing = Water + rough = Waste + normal + Pollution
- Fluorine chemistry - Waste go byebye or you go bye bye in big boom.

Special thanks to Malcom for the ore renders and crystal renders! I recolored them as needed. Here is his stuff.
