Start underground. The Nauvis surface is hostile and normal surface construction is forbidden; dig out cave space, use shafts, and build your factory below.

i broke the starting surface acces shaft and now can't place it back down because im not on the surface

fixed how? I ran into the same issue and can't place it back down.
nvm, I still was on Factorio 2.0 and the ingame modportal served me 0.8 as "newest" version of the mod.
Switching to 2.1 and updating mods fixed the issue.
