This is the open beta to Carna, my first Factorio mod. It has been in development for several months. Expect numerous changes to come as the months go by as more things are either added, changed, removed, or implemented.

It is also important to note that AI generators such as ChatGPT and Gemini were used to generate new decorative entities that you will be interacting with, however all machines you will build and use were handcrafted. Given this planet is supposed to be a planet that was taken over by an AI in the long distant past, I felt it helped create a more alien dichotomy, showing the large difference between human engineering and AI. AI was also used to get some basic coding started, but most coding present in the mod was sourced from various authors and other mods, comments are left if you wish to check them out. Permission was sought and attained by the authors of said code. Most code was referenced from Cerys and a reference from Panglia for how to auto insert stuff into generated entities. Pelagos' composite entities was also referenced.

Welcome to Carna

Carna is a snowy world filled with mechanical devices that are scattered all across its surface. Being stuck in a perpetual snowfall, the planet is forever dark. An electromagnetic field covers the atmosphere of the planet, resulting in occasional lightning strikes on the surface.

The snowy landscape is host to large pools of Carnan plasma, an extreme temperature fluid that will be essential for running new machinery and foraging the surface in order to dive into the knowledge waiting on it. This world is however cold, not as cold as Aquilo, but cold enough to cause machines to run slower than they normally would. Any engineers wanting to exploit Carna's resources will need to find a way to heat up the surrounding area to allow the machines to operate at optimal speeds.

The main resource on Carna is salvage, but unlike other piles of scrap, this material is almost unusable to recycle. It will need to be strained through a process using special Carnan machines to dismantle and isolate the useful atom resources inside to attain basic resources.

But satellite scans show that there is movement on Carna's surface, the planet is not dead. Deadly mechanical dwellers are littering the surface. Defenses will be required to protect the factory from anything that may not approve of our activities.

In order to most reliably gain basic resources, we can either ship them in from offworld, or find a way to grow them on Carna.

Beware that Carna is a difficult planet, not only does it have enemies, the weather actively impedes you. Items have spoilage as well. The planet may take well over 30 hours to actually complete, but it comes with some big rewards. Some rewards are trivial, such as the ability to grow ores whereever you desire, completely removing the need to mine ore patches if you have big enough farms or if the landscape allows you to. Others are super big, such as wirelessly transmitting energy across an entire surface! There are also equipment utilities that you can make to either extend your reach, enhance personal crafting speed, or simply give you more inventory.

There were planned to be two different modes of play for Carna, but only one is available, the default mode, and I want to prioritize on getting that most fixed and balanced out.

IMPORTANT:

Carna's atmosphere has 3 different modes, the default is SIMPLE mode, which has no effect on UPS from my playing with it. All machines are slowed by default unless counterbalanced by the heating entity. The other two modes, COMPLEX and OPTIMIZED may have UPS impacts, but are far more indepth. So far, I have not experienced many UPS impacts from either, but you never know. Part of the test I suppose. You should not switch between the atmosphere modes once a surface for Carna is started, otherwise it will result in instability. I'd recommend reading up on the options to see which you would prefer.

Do you have what it takes to conquer Carna?

MUSIC:
Music was sourced from Cryochamber, who state that you are free to use their music so long as proper credit is given. I would implore you to check out their works, there are such incredible atmospheric OSTs on their channel that I love. All artists and names as well as album should be in the metadata of the .ogg files for the specific songs. I claim no ownership over any of their property.
