g [Implemented] Naming a car

It would be really nice if you could give a car a name. If you have different cars with different inventory filters, you could easily distinguish between them from a distance.

Would it be OK if the name was only visible in the GUI and messages printed to the player? This my be possible, but not right now: I'm not that comfortable with building GUIs yet, so it would take more time than I can afford at the moment.

By the way: May I compliment you for the timing of your request? I'm working together with the author of Vehicle Wagon 2 at making it compatible with GCKI and Autodrive. I was about to send him my remote interface, now I'll rework it to make it more general so we won't have to change things every time I decide to add different data to the vehicles.

Yeah, that would be really great. Just put the name in front of the car icon in your existing GUI, and add a button next to the stop button to name it. I don't really see much need for the name to show up on the details when you hover over the vehicle with your mouse, but of course it would be nice if it did, just for completeness.

Regarding compliments, I need to check with my ego manager if I haven't received too many compliments lately. :)

I'm playing the Reddit Community Map for May here, which is how I discovered this mod, as it's listed as one of the optional mods, and I must say, I love it! I don't think I'll play Factorio without it ever again! :) I hate driving the car manually. The controls changing from moving your character to moving a car really bug me, so I didn't really use cars that much. With this mod it takes that frustration of driving the car away, which causes me to go almost everywhere with the car. (Since the community map also includes Transport Drones, I have yet to build a rail network, so going anywhere by train is not an option on this playthrough yet). Because I'm using this mod intensely this playthrough, I just noticed a couple things that would be really nice to have (like the buffer chest request and naming a car), so I thought to ask. :). Improved pathfinding would also be nice, as currently it sometimes is doing ridiculous things, but I understand that is a rather difficult thing. It's just funny sometimes how I have a road placed (because of the Transport Drones), and my car is pathing next to it, zig-zagging between obstacles, instead of taking a straight line on the road which is unobstructed.

Must take care not to overload the GUI, though. It probably would be necessary to limit the length of the name.

Nice to hear that! By the way, if you don't use it already, try GCKI to have your car always near you when you want to use it. :-)

Yes, noticed that myself. Currently, Autodrive is useful for pathing over long distances. Some micromanagement like provided by Pavement Drive Assit would be useful, but I'm not sure if I can manage that.

If name length is a concern, even an icon would be great to have. Just an additional button in front of the car icon, which when clicked allows you to select anything that is selectable as a signal.

I've read the description, but from what I understand, it teleports the car? This feels cheaty to me (Look at me, playing a modded game with mods that are there to take some complexity away, but this one crosses the cheating line). What I have done, is put a chest near spawn point with a remote control from this mod in it. So if I die, I immediately have a remote control. Then I can click next to me, and my car will come to me as well. This seems to solve the same problem as GCKI, except that the car needs to drive to me, so I might have to wait a bit.

Yes, that sounds feasible. Adding a name is more complicated (I guess), because it might be necessary to check the input…

It's just one-way teleporting, to a spot within your reach, so you can enter your car. You can't choose a distant destination (by default, vanilla reach of 10 tiles is the maximal distance), so usually you don't want to teleport a vehicle when you're inside. Teleporting yourself can still be useful if you're stuck in a position you can't drive away from. Besides, being able to lock your car may be useful for multiplayer …

Added custom names for the next version. The name will be rendered above the vehicle, in the color chosen by the player who named the vehicle. Names will persist until changed/removed by the player, or until the vehicle is destroyed. If a vehicle with a custom name is loaded onto a vehicle wagon, the name will be reserved until the vehicle is unloaded or the wagon carrying it is destroyed. Naturally, custom names from Autodrive will be synced with those from GCKI (which will also allow you to name vehicles in the next version).
