First of all, thank you for this amazing mod! It has been VERY useful to me. Factorio is an incredible game, but I feel that train automation still has a lot of room for improvement, even for those of us who are used to programming logic. Haha!
Suggestion:
Enable a way to retire excess trains
The problem:
The number of depot stations needs to grow as the number of trains in your factory increases. This forces players to build a large number of depot stations in advance, trying to anticipate potential bottlenecks as their factory expands.
Proposed solution:
I don't think it's necessary to implement train dismantling directly into this mod. Not only could it be quite complex (especially if implemented in a sophisticated way, like Train Foundry), but it would also go somewhat against the mod's philosophy of focusing exclusively on logistics.
However, I see a great opportunity to make train dismantling possible through a relatively simple feature:
At depot stations, players could define a destination station for idle trains. Additionally, there could be a setting such as "Maximum number of idle trains", defining how many idle trains are allowed to remain at depot stations. Any trains exceeding this limit would be sent to the designated destination station to be dismantled.
Following this approach, the actual responsibility for dismantling trains would be delegated to another system or mod.
Furthermore, this feature would be very easy to integrate with other mods, such as Train Foundry, for example.
