I spent the last few days playing this and I have some more bug/balance reports but first:
The lava block experience itself is quite good, getting better at doing various things as you do them feels great there's just a few things that feel off about it.
Some parts of the Lava tech tree seem backwards/off:
For example you need 666 red/green/blue packs to research advanced lava smelting but the tech is currently worthless alone. Brick smelting is granted at the start of the game (seems to be a bug based on the mod description and the fact that it's re-unlocked here) and smelting iron/copper into liquid isn't useful since you can't cool them with this research. That's hidden away behind Air cooler (1000 lava packs and 2000 blue packs) and Advanced Lava cooling (an additional 200 of each pack).
The air compressor and its recipes are also a bit problematic. Theoretically the iron/copper from air recipes give more ore per second than a chemical plant but in practice they're so large and energy hungry you can place 3 chemical plants in the same footprint as one chain of air compressors to run those recipes.
The lava crafting researches also have issues. The description for the lava modules say "using lava instead of standard materials" but that's just not true. All but 1 of them take the exact same materials, plus a significant amount of lava to create. The machines crafting these would need a dedicated pump for each one and the recipes cost the exact same number of circuits/modules as creating the modules with the other recipe anyway with the only benefit being speed but by the time you can really afford to have a full sized circuit factory dedicated to module production you're probably off planet and have access to EM plants anyway. Before then on Nauvis/Lava block itself you're too restricted to take advantage of or need that speed. Only Efficiency 3 actually delivers on the promise of less materials but spoilage is so cheap it doesn't really feel like I'm getting a real saving.
The flying robot frame recipe is better for the most part because although saving 1 steel is minor in the grand scheme of factorio (especially with unlimited materials) it being significantly faster to craft and there being no other machines that add productivity or speed that would invalidate this recipe.
XP science pack/lab I do wish the researches available from this were more in line with how you get them. I liked that there was a reward for hand crafting same as everything else in the early game of this mod, but the fact that the benefits from the hand crafting pack are limited to machine crafting kinda sucked. It would be nice if there was a research for faster player crafting and/or mining to make swapping the factory around simpler.
I also made it to Pyroclast but there seems to be a bug here. When lava block is active, there is a pack added called "Military 2" added that is locked behind rail guns. That in itself is fine (although I saw no researches that actually use this in the tree), but this also causes the Pyroclast science pack to get locked behind it so Pyroclast goes from being a mid game planet after Vulcanus to an end game planet. I loaded up Pyroclast on another save just to give it a fair shake but there's not much to be said about it yet. I know its WIP so no point in stressing over it, I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
