Winter is Coming

Not just a visual winter, and not a Aquilo-style freeze - dynamic seasons come to Nauvis with moving snow and thaw fronts, freezing lakes, increased factory energy consumption, heating, and mineable ice

g Power consumption during winter

(updated a month ago)

Hi! Huge fan of your mod, it revived an interest in exploring Nauvis for me. Not to mention winter is really beautiful on this planet.
1. Would you consider to make an option (of course it could be turn off in the settings) to increase power consumption for machine during this season? If it is not so easily done while conversion is in progress, it can be changed once the planet status (frozen/warm) is declared. For example, for just 10 or 20% additional power consumption while machine is active (not for maintenance). I think it could add a flavour for the season.
2. Is it intentional to start the game with winter? On any map winter is just starts, so by default, you cannot place water well to extract it for coal power. In that case, you have to wait winter to be over. Maybe I’ve missed some setting, but it is a way the game starts for me. So I have to manually change it back for summer every time.
3. Maybe make first few winters more frequent. Default 22/7 hours ration is quite long. Or it could be related to evolution factor or just playtime which could make winters or whole cycles longer. For example, first cycle is 3/1 (total, 4) while after 50 hours of evolution hit 0,3 it becomes 6/2 and on and on…

Hi! Thanks for the feedback!

  1. Increased energy consumption during winter is already on my shortlist. I think I found a nice way to implement it, so I will experiment with this.
  2. The short first summer is only for demonstration purposes. There is a season offset setting - setting it to 0 gives you a normal full first summer.
  3. Summer and winter durations are already configurable in the settings. I am also thinking about adding several winter severity levels: starting with a mild winter, possibly even without freezing lakes, then a medium winter, and finally an Aquilo-like winter. This should give the player enough time to understand the mechanics and prepare.

I'm not sure about season duration yet. Probably it would be better to vary it with some configurable probability, especially with different winter severity levels. But I find the idea of progressively longer seasons interesting as well.

Wow! I see you've implemented 3/1 cycle and power consumption feature! Thank you!

But since the update I've faced with a crash. Sorry for posting it here, I can't see a way to send a report personally.
I've tried to put mod down (which let me start the game) and when turn it back (which caused the crash again).

As well as I've noticed, all of the machines in the scenes on the starter screen acting like frozen. Is it intentional or is it caused by my failure as well? Maybe it will hint you the answer in a way. Maybe heating feature should be allowed as a configurable/optional? As I could see the heating parameter cannot be set to zero. Don't know that's the reason or not.

Thanks for checking it out!
This is exactly the right place for feedback and bug reports, so no worries about posting here :)

The crash might be related to loading an existing save after the update. I’ll investigate it.
The frozen machines in the main menu scenes are a side effect of applying Aquilo’s freezing mechanics to Nauvis
