Water Processing Fork

Clean water is not free.

Water Processing Fork brings the original K2 Water Processing concept by
ayashiemon to Factorio 2.0 and expands it into a more general water
infrastructure mod.

Natural surface water is no longer treated as perfectly clean process water.
Offshore pumps draw raw water, which must first be treated before it can be
used as normal factory water.

The mod also adds a separate groundwater system with deep wells, allowing
large factories to develop independent water infrastructure where local
conditions permit it.

The goal is not to turn water into an excessively complicated production
chain. Water treatment should remain understandable, useful and industrially
plausible while giving water supply infrastructure a real purpose.

What it adds

Surface-water treatment

Natural water tiles provide raw water instead of normal clean water.

Raw water can be processed through several treatment stages using reusable
filters and treatment media.

Higher treatment stages provide greater throughput and make use of more
advanced materials when Krastorio 2 is installed.

Groundwater

Version 0.3.7 introduces a complete groundwater path.

A new Deep Well can extract groundwater independently of nearby lakes or
oceans.

The well:

  • occupies a 5×5 footprint,
  • produces 250 groundwater per second,
  • consumes 5 MW while operating,
  • has a small idle power drain,
  • does not accept modules or beacon effects,
  • and provides four centered fluid outputs.

Groundwater is cleaner than untreated surface water and therefore requires
less treatment effort before becoming usable process water.

Krastorio 2 also gains an advanced imersite-based groundwater treatment route.

Deep-well placement

Deep wells are intentionally not universal free-water generators.

Space Age

Groundwater is currently available on:

  • Nauvis
  • Gleba

It is intentionally unavailable on:

  • Vulcanus
  • Fulgora
  • Aquilo
  • space platforms

Unknown modded planets are blocked by default unless explicit groundwater
support is added.

Space Exploration

Deep wells may only be placed on planets or moons that actually provide water.

They are blocked on:

  • waterless worlds,
  • asteroid belts,
  • orbital surfaces,
  • and spaceships.

SE water richness affects whether groundwater exists, but does not scale the
well's throughput.

Treatment progression

The exact progression adapts to the installed mod stack.

Vanilla Factorio

Water Processing Fork includes its own core technologies, recipes and treatment
materials.

No Krastorio 2 dependency is required.

Space Age

The core water-treatment system remains available, while deep groundwater
extraction is positioned as a late-game / early-space technology.

Krastorio 2

The mod integrates with K2 materials, technology cards and processing
categories.

Advanced treatment stages use K2 resources such as silicon, lithium and
imersite.

Krastorio 2 + Space Exploration

K2 and SE progression are combined.

Advanced water treatment and deep groundwater extraction are placed in the
early space progression and integrate with SE science requirements.

Space Exploration without Krastorio 2

SE-only installations are also supported.

The mod keeps its independent core treatment system while applying
Space Exploration's planet and water-availability rules to deep wells.

Reusable treatment media

The treatment system uses reusable filter materials rather than turning every
litre of water into a large consumable-resource sink.

Depending on the treatment stage, filters or purification media are returned
after use and can be regenerated or replaced.

This follows the same general design philosophy as Krastorio 2's
air-purification systems while remaining usable without K2.

Factorio 2.0 reimplementation

This fork is a clean Factorio 2.0 reimplementation of the original
K2 Water Processing 0.1.0 concept.

The old Factorio 1.1 / legacy K2 prototype structure has been replaced with a
modern architecture split into:

  • a mod-independent core,
  • Krastorio 2 compatibility,
  • Space Exploration compatibility,
  • and Space Age-specific surface rules.

The precipitation tank and deep well use their own Factorio 2.0-compatible
graphics and prototype definitions.

Supported environments

Tested release configurations for version 0.3.7:

  • Factorio 2.0.77
  • Vanilla Factorio
  • Space Age
  • Krastorio 2 2.0.19
  • Space Exploration 0.7.57
  • Krastorio 2 + Space Exploration

Version 0.3.7 was also tested successfully in an existing large K2SE mod-stack
savegame.

Existing saves

Be careful when adding this mod to an existing factory.

Natural water tiles are changed so that offshore pumps supply raw water
instead of normal clean water.

Existing water networks should therefore not be assumed to continue working
unchanged after installing the mod.

Review systems such as:

  • steam and power production,
  • boilers,
  • chemical plants,
  • refineries,
  • cooling systems,
  • Krastorio 2 production chains,
  • Space Exploration production chains,
  • and any other machine consuming normal water.

Existing pipes may initially still contain clean water while newly pumped water
is raw water.

Depending on the network layout, parts of an existing factory may therefore
stop operating until a treatment plant is installed and the water network is
converted.

For a new game this is part of the intended progression.

For an existing game, plan the conversion of your water infrastructure before
enabling the mod.

Wastewater compatibility

Water Processing Fork primarily handles natural water supply.

Industrial wastewater systems such as Krastorio 2 dirty-water processing are
kept separate.

Recovered industrial process water therefore remains valuable and does not
automatically need to pass through the natural-water treatment chain again.

This makes the mod suitable for use alongside more detailed wastewater and
resource-recovery systems.

Localisation

Currently included:

  • English
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Russian

All four localisation sets are maintained for the current 0.3.7 feature set.

Version 0.3.7 highlights

Version 0.3.7 is a major development step from the previous 0.2.1 release.

It includes:

  • Factorio 2.0 architecture refactor,
  • removal of the mandatory Krastorio 2 dependency,
  • Vanilla and Space Age support,
  • Space Exploration-only support,
  • raw-water treatment rework,
  • groundwater processing,
  • functional deep wells,
  • Space Age and SE placement restrictions,
  • new precipitation-tank graphics,
  • new deep-well graphics and operating LED animation,
  • dedicated destroyed deep-well remnants,
  • dedicated deep-groundwater technology,
