Seems as of 17.34, gears are no longer un-craftable.. i will look for any others and report them here.

Intermediate products include gears, circuits, copper cable, engines, and various other items that are either not placeable as a building, or not usable as a tool. If you wish to re-enable the recycling of these intermediate products, you can toggle the non-recyclable intermediates setting under mod options.
