Plasma Beacon

by Morlot

A beacon powered by fusion plasma. Long range, 4 module slots and high effect transmission, with productivity and quality modules available as an option. Designed to operate from the second row, alongside the ordinary beacons around a machine.

Changelog

Version: 2.0.1
Date: 23.08.2026
  Bugfixes:
    - Factorio-like mode: the glow no longer stays lit while the beacon is switched off for lack
      of usable plasma.
    - Factorio-like mode: new status "Not enough plasma". A beacon starved by its neighbours used
to report "Plasma too cold" even when the plasma was hot enough.
Version: 2.0.0
Date: 22.08.2026
  Major Features:
    - New startup setting "Reactor layout", offering a second consumption model. In the new
"Factorio-like" mode the beacon consumes plasma by energy content instead of by volume, so
hotter plasma goes further - and plasma only gets hot from the neighbour bonus of adjacent
fusion reactors. A lone reactor cannot run a beacon at all, two side by side can, and every
further neighbour makes the beacons cheaper. At a 2x2 block the cost matches the old model
exactly; below that it is higher, above it lower. The cluster has to keep running, though:
a reactor standing still stops counting towards the bonus.
  Changes:
    - New beacon status "Plasma too cold", for when plasma is connected but carries too little
energy to run the beacon - the state a lone reactor leaves it in.
    - In "Factorio-like" mode the plasma is drawn through an energy source rather than through a
recipe - handled by the engine itself, the same way a fusion generator draws its plasma.
The flow is smooth instead of arriving in lumps, so a reactor running below capacity no
longer stutters. The "Operation buffer" setting has nothing left to damp in that mode.
  Info:
    - The new mode is the recommended one - it is the one that actually engages with Factorio's
fusion mechanics. The old model stays as "simple" and remains the default, so updating
changes nothing in a running base until the setting is switched.
    - Idea and persistence: sh4dow (https://mods.factorio.com/user/sh4dow), who argued for
temperature scaled plasma across several rounds on the mod portal until it was clear that
      he was right. Thank you.
Version: 1.0.4
Date: 21.08.2026
  Features:
    - New startup setting "Operation buffer": how much plasma the beacon draws in one go. A larger
buffer damps the stutter of a fusion reactor producing more plasma than is drawn from it, at
the cost of a longer spin-up. Cleanest with a single beacon per reactor - several beacons
keep the offset they were built at, so their cycles overlap. Consumption still averages
      1 plasma/s. Default 1 plasma.
Version: 1.0.3
Date: 15.08.2026
  Optimizations:
    - Beacon status checks are now spread across the update interval instead of all landing in the
same tick. A base wide plasma outage no longer switches every beacon in one go.
Version: 1.0.2
Date: 14.08.2026
  Features:
    - New startup setting "Beacons required to craft": adds 2 beacons to the recipe. Off by
      default.
  Changes:
    - HD Plasma Duct is now a recommended dependency instead of a required one, so it can be
disabled. Without it, connect the plasma beacon directly to a fusion reactor's plasma output.
