I always wanted to do something with the biters besides shooting them, so here it is: you tame the hive and grow your factory out of it.
How it works
You put biter eggs into an incubator and get a hive queen. Five queens and a pile of parts from other planets make a hive core, and the core grows everything else out of more queens. All the living buildings eat nutrients and electricity, they heal on their own and breathe a little when they work. They only work inside the core's synaptic network, which has a limited number of slots, so you can't just spam them. And they pollute a lot, so expect visitors.
Buildings
- Guard nest - raises your own biters and spitters to protect the area around it. They're 2.5 times tougher than wild ones. Late on you get augmented ones: behemoths in chrome armour with quantum processors inside.
- Nutrient gland - turns eggs, fish and bioflux into biohumus, and biohumus into nutrients. +100% productivity on the biohumus step.
- Oil gland - crude oil out of eggs, 1000 per egg.
- Acid gland, chitin press (plastic and carbon), living walls that grow back when damaged.
- Bio smelter - basically a better foundry. +100% productivity, 6 module slots.
- Bio drill - beats the big mining drill, but you have to feed it.
- Neuro lab - 8x8, research speed 8, uses 40% of the packs, takes all the science packs.
- Synaptic node - extends the network like a power pole. Wire a signal into it and it comes out of every other node and radar on the planet.
- Hive lamp - a glowing pod that shines at night without power or nutrients.
- Photosynthetic gland - a living solar panel: 2 MW in full sun, as much as 33 panels, but it drinks water and sulfuric acid. Both pass through it, so you line them up on one pipe of each.
- Electric organ - a living accumulator: 500 MJ and 30 MW in a 3x3 block, a hundred accumulators' worth. No more accumulator fields.
- Nerve plexus and nerve trunk - living power poles: one covers 20x20 like a slightly better substation, the other carries power 48 tiles.
- Hive floor - living flesh you pave the ground with, like concrete and just as fast to walk on. The veins glow at night. Grown in the incubator from biohumus and stone bricks.
Nestworld (new in 2.0)
Beyond Gleba lies Nestworld, the home of the biters, and it does not want you there:
- The hives start nearly fully evolved, there are three times as many as on Nauvis, and every few minutes they send a wave at your buildings.
- Wild creep grows out of every hive, eats any floor except hive floor and hurts whatever stands on it. Metal buildings corrode off hive floor, and living buildings left without nutrients starve. Only living power works there.
- Far from the landing site stand ancient hives of four kinds: fire, acid, storm and star, with huge biters and spitters. Kill their worms, drive a subjugator into one and hold out for two minutes: the hive becomes yours and grows wild queens on royal jelly.
- Wild queens are what the strong buildings need now: the bio smelter, bio drill, neuro lab, synaptic beacon, neural quality module and Overmind. Each kind also opens a branch: the cauterizer that burns creep back, fire and storm guards, ore leaching.
- The planet runs on royal jelly lakes and amber. The jelly heart burns jelly for 40 MW day and night, amber gives the ancient genome for the genetic science pack.
- Genetic research gives quality breeding (hive cores and guard nests sometimes grow a better building or guard), living ships (bio thruster, chitin plating, a self-healing foundation) and, at Aquilo's level, queen synthesis.
/nest-test yes on a test map researches everything, takes you to Nestworld and builds every building there.
Endgame
There's a neural science pack and a research tree that needs stuff from Nauvis, Gleba, Vulcanus, Fulgora and Aquilo. At the end you get a synaptic beacon (4 slots, effectivity 2.0), a neural quality module (+5% quality) and the Overmind. The Overmind eats neural packs and queens, and as long as it's fed your whole force gets +10% research productivity.
Want to look at everything before committing? Type /hive-test on a test map and it builds a demo hive next to you.
Every hive building except the beacon takes circuit wires.
