Would it be possible to add to the mod settings option that will allow unlocking charcoal production in early game, lcoked behind maybe red and green science?

I'll have to look at how the recipes are set up, but sure. No reason why not. Although if you're looking for something less Space Age while I get around to this, you can always try Biodome Industries:

That has a simpler Charcoal tech, and is more geared towards oil production.

I know it's been a year, but I got around to adding that while updating to Factorio 2.1. It's now available in 1.0.6 of this mod.
