A continuation of Electric Furnaces by GotLag.
All of the original idea, balance and art, including the thumbnail, belong to GotLag. The original hasn't been updated since early 2025, so this version keeps it going on Factorio 2.1. If you enjoy it, please go leave the original some love too. ❤️
What it adds
| Building | Speed | Modules | Pollution/min | Unlocked by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric stone furnace | 1 | – | 1 | Electronics |
| Electric steel furnace | 2 | – | 2 | Advanced material processing |
| Electric furnace 2 | 3 | 2 | 1.5 | Advanced material processing 3 |
| Electric furnace 3 | 4 | 4 | 2 | Advanced material processing 4 |
| Electric boiler | 1.8 MW | – | 0 | Steam power |
- The electric stone and steel furnaces fast-replace their burner versions. They need no fuel and pollute half as much.
- Electric furnaces 1 → 2 → 3 form an upgrade-planner chain. Pollution scales with speed, so pollution per plate stays the same as the vanilla electric furnace.
- The electric boiler turns electricity into steam 1:1. It's meant to supply steam for recipes and machines, not to generate net power. Its power draw and efficiency can be adjusted in the settings (default 1.8 MW, 100%).
🔥 Hot metal plates (optional, Space Age only)
Turn on Hot metal plates in the startup settings, and every furnace, from this mod or any other, makes hot plates that have to cool before they can be used.
- Cool them anywhere: hot plates cool by themselves on belts, in chests or in your inventory. The default is 30 seconds, adjustable in the settings.
- Water-cool them: an assembling machine with a water input cools them instantly (unlocked with Automation 2; it can't be hand-crafted).
- Steel: steel furnaces take hot iron plates directly.
- Watch your furnaces: if cooled plates sit in a furnace's output, it stops until someone empties it. Keep them emptied!
- Early research that asks you to craft plates counts hot plates, so nothing gets stuck.
- 🧤 Too hot to handle (extra option): players can't carry hot plates at all. Grab one and it drops at your feet. Wait for it to cool, or use inserters like a real engineer. Off by default.
Both settings are off by default and don't appear without Space Age.
Settings
Every part can be switched on or off in the startup settings: the stone furnace, steel furnace, advanced furnaces, boiler, hot metal and "too hot to handle". There's also an icon option that adds a lightning bolt so electric furnaces are easier to tell apart from burner ones.
Compatibility
- Works with or without Space Age and Quality.
- Fixed from the original's discussion page: crashes with graphics mods like Kawaii Factorio, and "next_upgrade … same bounding box" crashes with mods like Realistic Reactors Reborn.
- Space Exploration: the electric furnaces can run kiln recipes, so no separate compatibility mod is needed.
- If Bob's Assembling Machines (or another mod) already has its own electric furnace 2/3, this mod leaves them alone.
- If Mobius1's Electric Boiler is installed, this mod's boiler steps aside, since both use the same name.
- Overhaul mods that remove vanilla furnaces, technologies or science packs won't cause load errors.
Switching from the original
Building, item and recipe names haven't changed, so you can swap the original out for this one in an existing save. Don't run both at once: they're marked incompatible, as is the other 2.1 port (electric-furnaces-port), which uses the same names.
