I don't know how easy this is to implement but it would be very useful for when you read out the ore patch contents to build an alarm when it's running out etc.
I noticed that a RoboPort in the vicinity without any constructions bots, will give you an alarm by your toolbelt that you have a miner that needs recovering. A bit of an expensive "sensor" but it does work.
