It seems like the character shouldn't be affected by transport belts, yet this is the case. Is this intended?

Hello owomaddie,

I submitted a Modding interface requests for this back in May.

It is not desired or intended, but the game does not give me the tools/API/prototypes to fix it easily.

If you could, I would greatly appreciate it if you would post to that thread with your desire for that feature so I could fix it in this mod. 😀

WUBE recently added a new prototype for this and the next version of the mod should have this implemented.
