Render the local planet behind platforms when in orbit. Now with parallax, rotation, and mod support!
Small changes concerning balance, gameplay, or graphics.
Map generation and terrain modification.
Hi,
could u add an optional HD-Version of the planets, please?
saw a post on reddit and if u have a bigger screen it looks nice with my small screen the planets are bigger then my screen and full of blurry pixels.
so pls better sprites or some settings to change the size displayed
I only have access to the sprites provided by the game, so the current resolution is the best I can do. Though if provided with HD sprites, I can see what I can do.
so... just take a look at "hd age" mod.
my idea would be that u provide an optional mod with hd-sprites- they are easy to generate. and in your mod just check if these sources are available and fall back to the SD version provided by the game.
There is actually a very good chance that installing that mod with this mod’s latest version will automatically use the new sprites. I’m willing to bet the planet render will become massive and stretch off screen though, so I plan on adding planet downscaling later to fix that.
I'm currently working on rendering HD images (and even videos) for the planets.
Here is a teaser for Nauvis:

I will have a lot of fun making glowing lava and random thunderstorms :P

That animation looks awesome! Will be cool to see the newer planets too when you get around to them.
If you ever make it into a mod, or even just somehow turn it into a sprite sheet, I'd be happy to try and get this mod to be compatible. Would likely need to be an optional dependency due to a likely very large file size.
im working on some graphics too using ai upscaling

it doesnt. im using the hd-mods by default and the background spreites are still very SD...
I'll have to have a look at how they edit the graphics then I guess, do you know which mod changes the planet icons? I see that there are a lot of them.
nope, no idea. the mods i use just change the other entity graphics
did you try my new graphics?
slightly more reaction would be nice since i worked like 4 hours on them

Yeah unfortunately the game doesn't seem to support videos, it seems that I will need to compromise, by using only a few sprites to animate between with a fading transition, and make the planets smaller in the background.
I am still not sure if I want to:
- animate the day/night rotation and stay geostationary, synced with surface day/night
- animate the planet rotating but always stay on the bright side
At first I was going for a mix of both, but it's probably too much.
I have rendered more of Nauvis BTW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV0Y31ap5Rw

The link you've posted is broken, I'm not able to open it.
That one just says "The transfer you requested has been deleted"?

does it work now?

These links work, I can see them now.
Code wise, this implementation will break all modded planet support, so I'd need to mess around with that to get it working nicely. Additionally, I'd like to avoid keeping large image files in this mod, so it would be better to have a second mod that overwrites the game's sprites with these new ones. (And updates the relevant planet.starmap_icon fields.) This mod should automatically pick up on those changes and use the new sprites, though that hasn't been tested yet.
As for the actual planet sprites, the AI seems to have changed the planets fairly significantly. I think Nauvis and Vulcanus look pretty good, but Aquilo has mountains now, and Fulgora seems pretty rough. I think ideally the AI would only upscale the planets, and not take creative liberties. If you want to set up a mod to use these sprites, I'd be happy to help with any issues or compatibility problems that arise.
now earth have HD picture
Has anything changed from the last earth image? These seem identical. (Though if you've managed to get high resolution images working, then awesome!)

You can add this screenshot to the gallery on the information page
I realized my previous work for Nauvis looked too realistic and Earth-like, so I made something that looks closer to the ingame star map icon.
Please ask me if you want the PNG with transparent background, this is a 4K jpg:
Ingame original for reference
i uploaded them as a seperate mod

This is what I have done yet, if someone want to experiment with them ingame:
I must say, the planets Valerian created look quite nice and would be a wonderful addition to the mod. As it is right now, if you are zoomed into a space station to build, you will always have a blurry mess of pixels in the background gawking at you.
May I ask what the process was to create your versions of the renders?

Love the look @Valerian!
I wonder if it would be possible to render the day/night cycle on top of the planet as a sort of mask and at a lower resolution to not blow the file size up too much.
nah its ai generated crap, better wait for valerians mod
@ownlyMe: there are ppl out there that dont care WHO or WHAT generated / upscaled an image, as long as it makes them happy. And those ppl hope for even some AI-pictures

You could actually generate some nice stuff with AI too, but you need to do it properly. Using a generic AI upscaler will generate weird details because it doesn't understand it's supposed to be a planet. However I'm curious to try upscaling with modern custom tools, such as Stable Diffusion / Flux Dev using a proper prompt and some ControlNet models.

A few ideas on that subject:
- I think it would be fine if the planet in the background was much smaller, and kind of fixed position relative to the camera (parallax style). That way the image would be smaller and we could consider doing a proper animation without blowing up the VRAM.
- As you can see on my latest pictures I put the shadow side on the bottom of the planet, to match the general look of the game: having the planet lit from the side or bottom would look inconsistent with the way all the other sprites in the game look lit from the top.
So the only way to animate the planet that could make sense visually would be to rotate the planet, but leave the sun/shadow in a fixed position relative to the camera.
Here is how it could look for Gleba, ingame it would be rotating much slower and with a little bit of fading transition:
Hello Valerian, I added your hi-res images for Nauvis and Gleba - the results are awesome! If you can provide similar files for the other planets, I can add those, too.

there are already upscaled images in 4k by OwnlyMe. whats wrong with them?
Speadge, I'm not sure why you're so ride or die for OwnlyMe, but people are allowed to have different tastes and those ones are a completely different style. So if you prefer those, fine, but stop bringing it up every chance you get.
cagricelebi, I tried to diff your fork with Nauviax' branch, but it seems you haven't committed your changes to Github it seems. The release does have the changes. Any reason for this?
Hello jurgy,
The pull request was rejected, and I'm changing the approach.
You can download this impromptu mod called "valerian-planets" as a zip file and overwrite 2 planet images.
https://github.com/az3/visible-planets/releases/download/1.1.1/valerian-planets_1.0.0.zip
I'll contact Valerian to see how to proceed.
Update: Valerian plans to complete their work and release it as a mod. So I won't be using those assets. Let's wait for the awesome work to finish!

Nice, I will try to finish them this evening and publish as a mod soon.
There are multiple planet sprite mods, so I made mod to enable settings to pick each planet from different mods.
Feel free to contribute.
Fulgora done, no time to do the rest today, will continue tomorrow.
That is absolutely lovely Valerian, you're really hitting the nail on the head with those, looking forward to all of them being finished!
Hey, it's me from reddit. It's great to see all these different interpretations of the planets! I've updated mine today. Feel free to add them to whichever mods!
edit: well, that was easier than thought. Made a mod here:
Vulcanus done
Ok I'm almost done making all 5 planets, I will stop spamming this thread and release my own mod :P

Looking forward to it. I really like all your creations (and shamelessly using them on my PC already). Thanks again!

Done! https://mods.factorio.com/mod/valerian-planets
I kept the same mod name as your mod expected so it's already compatible, you just have to update the mod description to add the link to mine
\(^O^)/
Is there anyone here who could help me create planet images for my mod, Real Starry Universe?
