Portable Fuelled Power
More power. Lower upfront costs. Fuelled by your factory.
Portable Fuelled Power introduces three alternative equipment-grid generators that provide substantially more electricity for a lower initial crafting cost, in exchange for ongoing fuel consumption.
Unlike the original vanilla generators, which provide electricity without consuming fuel, these alternatives require a continuous fuel supply. The original vanilla equipment remains completely unchanged and available to players.
The goal is simple: reduce the initial investment, increase available power, and shift the cost towards long-term fuel production.
Native Automatic Refuelling
Portable Fuelled Power uses Factorio 2.1's built-in equipment burner and automatic refuelling systems.
Compatible fuel is automatically transferred from character's inventory or supported vehicle inventory into the generator when required.
There is no need to manually replenish the equipment during normal supported operation.
Generators
Industrial Generator — 300 kW

An early-game alternative to portable solar panels, unlocked through the new Portable Combustion Power technology.
- Power: 300 kW, regardless of daylight.
- Equipment grid: 3×2.
- Fuel: Wood, coal, solid fuel, rocket fuel, nuclear fuel and other compatible chemical fuels.
- Efficiency: 70%.
- Research: Portable Combustion Power, following Portable Solar Panel and Engine technologies.
Ideal for players who want to power personal roboports, exoskeletons and other equipment without relying on sunlight.
Fuelled Portable Fission Reactor — 1.875 MW
![]()
A more powerful and considerably cheaper alternative to the vanilla portable fission reactor.
- Power: 1.875 MW — 2.5× vanilla output.
- Equipment grid: 4×4, identical to vanilla.
- Fuel: Uranium fuel cells.
- Efficiency: 20%.
- Crafting cost: Approximately 30% of the vanilla equivalent.
- Spent fuel: Depleted uranium fuel cells are discarded automatically.
Fuelled Portable Fusion Reactor — 6.25 MW
![]()
An advanced fuel-powered alternative to the vanilla portable fusion reactor, available with Space Age.
- Power: 6.25 MW — 2.5× vanilla output.
- Equipment grid: 4×4, identical to vanilla.
- Fuel: Fusion power cells.
- Efficiency: 20%.
- Crafting cost: Approximately 30% of the vanilla equivalent.
Ongoing Fuel Consumption
The additional power and lower construction costs are balanced by continuous fuel consumption.
The following table shows estimated consumption at maximum electrical output, using normal-quality equipment.
| Generator | Fuel | Energy per item | Duration per item | Items per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Industrial | Wood | 2 MJ | 4.7 sec | 771.43 |
| Industrial | Coal | 4 MJ | 9.3 sec | 385.71 |
| Industrial | Solid fuel | 12 MJ | 28 sec | 128.57 |
| Industrial | Rocket fuel | 100 MJ | 3 min 53 sec | 15.43 |
| Industrial | Nuclear fuel | 1.21 GJ | 47 min 3 sec | 1.28 |
| Fission | Uranium fuel cell | 8 GJ | 14 min 13 sec | 4.22 |
| Fusion | Fusion power cell | 40 GJ | 21 min 20 sec | 2.81 |
Actual fuel duration depends on equipment power demand. Figures represent theoretical continuous full-load consumption.
Important: Nuclear fuel used by the industrial generator is the locomotive fuel item, not the uranium fuel cells used by the portable fission reactor.
Performance-focused implementation
- No runtime Lua scripts.
- No
control.lua. - No
on_tickoron_nth_tickhandlers. - No periodic inventory scanning or scripted fuel transfers.
- No scripted energy generation.
- Native Factorio fuel consumption and automatic refuelling.
All fuel and power calculations are handled by Factorio's game engine, with no additional mod-script processing during gameplay.
Compatibility
- Factorio: 2.1.20 or newer.
- Space Age: Optional; required only for the fuelled fusion reactor.
- Quality: Supports Factorio's native equipment quality system.
- Vehicle equipment: Native automatic refuelling works with supported vehicle inventories.
- Vanilla equipment: All original generators remain available and unchanged.
Portable Fuelled Power is designed to expand equipment-grid power choices rather than replace the original generators, allowing players to decide whether they prefer permanent fuel-free electricity or more powerful equipment with a continuing fuel cost.
