Thanks, man, was wondering this myself until I gave up. Decided to just flood the homeworld with items instead. Using it sounds like a better solution now that I know how :)

If you just want to automate what goes to the homeworld you don't need the throughput monitor for that. The homeworld speaker outputs a signal with the needs of the homeworld (amounts needed be sent to last a full day iirc) so you can use that to control your belts/inserters. Portals can be hooked up to read their current inventory. Between the two thats all you need.
