Advanced Fluid Handling Continued for PyMods

Advanced Fluid Handling Continued for PyMods is an unofficial Factorio 2.1 continuation of the original Advanced Fluid Handling For PyMods compatibility addon.

It adapts Advanced Fluid Handling Continued (AFHC) for use with the Pyanodon mod suite by adjusting underground pipe tiers, underground distances, recipes, technology progression, graphics and other compatibility details to better fit the PyMods ecosystem.

This mod is an addon and requires Advanced Fluid Handling Continued.

What does this addon do?

Advanced Fluid Handling Continued adds a large collection of underground pipe junctions, underground pumps and specialized fluid-handling tools.

Pyanodon's mods significantly change the normal Factorio progression and introduce their own pipe tiers, materials and fluid infrastructure.

This addon bridges the two systems.

It adjusts AFHC so that its underground fluid-handling components better follow Pyanodon's progression instead of using their normal vanilla-oriented balance and recipes.

Among other things, the addon:

  • Integrates AFHC's three underground pipe tiers with Pyanodon pipe progression.
  • Adjusts underground distances to match the corresponding Py pipe tiers.
  • Adjusts maximum pipeline extents to match Pyanodon pipes.
  • Supports Pyanodon's braided pipe connection categories.
  • Adjusts underground pump recipes for Py materials.
  • Adjusts underground pipe component recipes.
  • Adjusts technology prerequisites to fit Py progression.
  • Matches underground pump speed and energy usage to the current vanilla pump values.
  • Provides optional Pyanodon-style graphics for AFHC underground pipe junctions.
  • Removes AFHC valves by default because PyMods already provide their own fluid-control options.
  • Maintains compatibility with the current Factorio 2.1 prototype system.

The intention is to make AFHC feel like it belongs inside a PyMods game rather than simply placing the standard AFHC progression on top of Pyanodon.

Requirements

This addon requires:

  • Factorio 2.1
  • Advanced Fluid Handling Continued
  • Py Industry
  • Py High Tech

Optional compatibility is included for:

  • Py Alien Life
  • Py High Tech Pipes Reskin
  • Configurable Valves

The mod is intentionally incompatible with the original:

underground-pipe-pack_for_py

Both versions should not be enabled at the same time.

Advanced Fluid Handling Continued

This addon is designed specifically for:

Advanced Fluid Handling Continued

AFHC is an unofficial Factorio 2.1 continuation of the original Advanced Fluid Handling mod by TheStaplergun.

AFHC maintains the established internal item, entity, recipe and technology prototype names from the original mod, allowing this Py compatibility addon to continue working with the same underlying fluid-handling system while using the new standalone AFHC mod identity.

AFHC can be found here:

Why does this continued version exist?

The original Advanced Fluid Handling For PyMods addon was created to integrate Advanced Fluid Handling with the Pyanodon mod suite.

As Factorio, Advanced Fluid Handling and Pyanodon's mods evolved, the addon eventually required additional compatibility work for the current Factorio 2.1 environment.

After creating Advanced Fluid Handling Continued, I wanted to continue using the same fluid-handling system in my own Pyanodon game.

The existing Py compatibility addon therefore also needed to be updated.

Rather than replacing the original project or presenting the work as an official update, this version has its own standalone identity:

Advanced Fluid Handling Continued for PyMods

Internal mod name:

advanced-fluid-handling-continued-for-py

The continuation starts with its own version history at:

0.0.1

Factorio 2.1 compatibility work

Updating the addon involved more than simply changing the Factorio version number.

Several areas of the original compatibility code required changes for the current versions of Factorio, AFHC and PyMods.

The continued version includes fixes and updates for:

  • Factorio 2.1 data-stage compatibility.
  • The Factorio 2.1 valve prototype type.
  • Correct removal of AFHC valves and their associated items and recipes.
  • Technology unlock cleanup when removed recipes are no longer available.
  • Updated AFHC mod dependencies.
  • Updated AFHC asset namespaces.
  • Underground pipe distance handling.
  • Pipeline extent handling.
  • Pyanodon braided pipe connection categories.
  • Underground pump configuration.
  • Underground pump icon handling.
  • Layered Pyanodon pipe graphics.
  • Underground pipe direction arrows.
  • Pipe cover inheritance.
  • Directional sprite alignment.
  • Current AFHC prototype names and structure.
  • Deterministic release packaging for the continued mod.

A malformed Lua statement inherited in the previous source was also corrected during the Factorio 2.1 update.

Pipe tiers

The addon adapts the three AFHC pipe tiers to corresponding Pyanodon infrastructure.

Tier 1

The first AFHC underground pipe tier follows the standard iron pipe infrastructure.

Its underground distance and pipeline properties are derived from the current standard pipe-to-ground prototype.

An optional startup setting can slightly increase the Tier 1 underground distance.

Tier 2

The second AFHC underground pipe tier is integrated with Pyanodon's Niobium pipe infrastructure.

When braided pipes are enabled, Tier 2 underground connections use the appropriate Niobium pipe connection category.

Its recipes and progression also use Py materials.

Tier 3

The third AFHC underground pipe tier is integrated with the higher-tier Pyanodon pipe infrastructure.

When braided pipes are enabled, these connections use the corresponding high-tier pipe connection category.

Tier 3 recipes use materials appropriate to the later stages of the Py progression.

Underground pumps

AFHC includes three tiers of underground pumps.

This addon adjusts those pumps for the Pyanodon environment.

The underground distances of the pumps follow their corresponding pipe tiers, while their pumping speed and energy usage are synchronized with the current standard Factorio pump prototype.

This avoids maintaining outdated hardcoded pump statistics when Factorio or other dependencies change.

The pump recipes are also adjusted to use appropriate Pyanodon materials and AFHC pipe components.

AFHC valves

By default, this addon removes the valves supplied by Advanced Fluid Handling Continued.

This includes:

  • Overflow valves.
  • Top-up valves.
  • Check valves.

This behavior originates from the original Py compatibility addon, where AFHC's valves were disabled because the Pyanodon ecosystem already provides its own fluid-control options.

The Factorio 2.1 continuation correctly removes the complete valve prototype chain, including the entity prototypes, items, recipes and related technology unlocks.

This prevents incomplete prototype references during PyPostProcessing.

Pipe graphics

The addon includes an optional startup setting that replaces AFHC underground pipe junction graphics with graphics based on the corresponding Pyanodon pipe tiers.

Direction indicators are retained so that the connection layout of the different underground junctions remains visible.

The continued version also includes updated handling for layered Pyanodon sprites.

This is important because modern Py pipe graphics can contain multiple sprite layers rather than a single image definition.

The addon preserves those layers and adds the AFHC direction arrows on top.

Startup settings

The addon provides settings for several compatibility options.

Reskin underground pipe junctions

Allows AFHC underground pipe junctions to visually follow Pyanodon's pipe tiers.

Enabled by default.

Longer Tier 1 underground pipes

Optionally increases the normal Tier 1 underground distance by one tile.

Disabled by default.

Keep AFHC valves

The addon contains internal support for retaining AFHC valves, although the normal PyMods configuration removes them by default.

Save compatibility and testing

The current continuation has been tested with Factorio 2.1 together with Advanced Fluid Handling Continued and the required Pyanodon environment.

Version 0.0.3 successfully completes the Factorio data stage, PyPostProcessing and reaches the main menu.

It has also been tested by loading an existing Pyanodon world successfully.

Because Factorio mod packs can contain hundreds of mods and every Py installation can be different, compatibility problems with combinations I have not tested may still exist.

Please report problems specific to this continuation on GitHub.

When reporting an issue, including the Factorio log and your active mod list is extremely helpful.

Compatibility with the original addon

This continuation uses a new internal mod identity:

advanced-fluid-handling-continued-for-py

The original addon used:

underground-pipe-pack_for_py

The two addons are explicitly marked as incompatible and should not be enabled together.

When moving an existing save to the continued version, disable the original Py addon and enable this continuation together with Advanced Fluid Handling Continued.

As always, making a backup of an important save before changing major mods is recommended.

Original addon and credits

This project is based on the original Advanced Fluid Handling For PyMods addon.

The original addon was created and maintained by its original authors and contributors, including Sopel and Dremon.

The underlying Advanced Fluid Handling system was originally created by TheStaplergun.

Advanced Fluid Handling Continued and this Factorio 2.1 PyMods continuation are currently maintained by goakiller900.

Full credit for the original concepts, code and previous compatibility work remains with their respective original authors and contributors.

This continuation exists because I still wanted to use these mods in a modern Factorio 2.1 Pyanodon game and wanted to keep the existing work usable rather than letting it disappear.
