I'd like to suggest a water variant of the maze (And a config toggle to turn off land fill). It'd feel a bit more natural (though unnaturally shaped water will still stand out of course) and perhaps disable the game's own water spawns as well.
Pollution cannot pass over void, so void is a natural barrier to pollution. Pollution would move to other cells "faster" this way however. Having pollution pass over a water variant is both a pro and a con in this way.
