A Mod to allow for variable lane splitters with programmable behaviour. Continuing the mod for the time being as themadgunman seems to be absent.

Hi AnodyneEntity, just got some free time and decided to check in on things, if you want to continue this mod then i'm quite happy to deprecate the old version, its not very popular and I haven't used it myself for a long time and im not even sure the belt speed multipliers and things are correct anymore tbh

Im quite happy to do a quick update fix just to maintain it, but if you want to take it over and give it some love then just let me know

It's not very popular? Oh, man that makes me sad. I love this mod and absolutely swear by it :) Honestly, whomever picks this up, I dearly hope it stays updated because it really is a nice piece of kit to have. Thank you kindly for making it.

tbh since they added the priority to splitters it was pretty much redundant, just shift everything to the left/right and use https://mods.factorio.com/mod/belt-balancer

I did, originally. The Belt Balancer is a wonderful mod in terms of usability in that it can do curved splitters, but its performance is substantially worse than the Compound Splitters. Don't get me wrong - Compounds Splitters itself is eating up quite a bit of UPS at this point since I have so many of them with so much throughput, but Belt Balancer killed three times that performance with 1/10 - 1/20 of the throughput. Predominantly, I'm looking for some way to merge an arbitrary number of belts into an arbitrary other number of belts, and this mod is currently by far the best at it.

It's not entirely redundant, you save a lot of space with this mod, with the vanilla splitters, you need to add layers upon layers to effective get the same result that a single line of splitters this mod adds.

But yes, I'll keep updating this from here if you're willing to pass it off, looking for a reason to start learning more about code.

Just as a random thought, since this is being maintained - it might be worth looking at the new "linked inventories" mechanic recently added to the game. It might help as a means of moving items around using native code, as opposed to doing it through Lua, which is where this mod's primary performance hit is.

But to the broader point - yes, there absolutely IS merit to this sort of item in the game. While I can use vanilla Splitters to split and merge many/many belts, they're gigantic and not always reliable. This might work for a single massive facility with a main bus, but it doesn't work quite as well with multiple small facilities separated by train stations. Multilane Splitters works wonders for saving space that way.
