as a suggestion for the early game, a sopwith camel might be interesting, a plane that can't withstand much damage , travel fast, and can only attack at a fraction of the usual fire rate, but is mostly wooden/canvas and available at red or green technology. this will be best with mods like AAI industry where there is a lot of work to do in the early game.
