Gypsy Leaf

Turns the crash site ship into a permanent, and useful, feature of the map.

What it does

The mod turns the ship into something like a shrine, and a storage base.

  • The ship has 112 slots of inventory storage.

  • The ship's slots can be filtered, like the charaacter's inventory.

  • The slots can be limited with a bar, like the assorted chest can.

  • The ship cannot be mined.

  • The ship can be connected to the circuit network, acting like a chest.

If active when the game is started other changes are made

  • The ship cannot be damaged.

  • A semi-hidden chest is created in the wreckage.

  • A Scout buggy, a self-powered, light-duty un-armed car, is added.

  • The Scout buggy has a locked equipment grid with 2 roboports and supporting power.

Head-canon support

Over the years I have developed a bit of head-canon about the engineer, Nauvis, and what's going on. Relevant to this mod, is the ship's role in research.

All the research done in the labs is, unless a mod is used, the same. Labs on Nauvis, no matter how far apart they are, always contribute to the same research target.

The engineer is, by lucky coincidence for us, a very bright engineer. Still, there are limits to how much one being can know, and recall, from their own brain. That's why the 'research' even exists. The engineer doesn't know how to build a rocket, but through a long trail of research topics, the engineer can figure it out. So, what 'directs' this research, and what source of data does the engineer have?

The ship is the answer. At one point it was flying, in space we think. If it's going from some 'here' to some other 'there' it needs a bunch of data. If it's part of a colonization effort it needs a whole bunch of data. And them even more. All this data was stored in the ship's computer banks, and those where damaged, but not destroyed, in the crash. Using the ship's computers and the labs supplied with different science packs, the engineer is able to research anything needed.

The ship, therefore, is just a little bit important to all this research. Makes sense that it ought to be somewhat protected.

Why

The ship crashed. Yet it did so mostly intact. A few parts a scattered about, and more are probably missing. Still after whatever happened to cause the ship to come down it survived reentry, in probably less than ideal conditions. It was able to land safely enough for the engineer, at least, to walk away. That's one tough ship. How is it possible that teeth, claws, and some poisonous acid are so able to damage it? Makes no sense to me. So, now they cannot. What ever tools the engineer has, or can make, cannot damage or dismantle it. At least in the beginning. After it's been there a while, the engineer no longer needs to scavenge it for parts, so it remains anyway.

Additionally, it's a ship. A space-faring ship. You don't travel through space on a shoestring inventory that fits into 5, or 12 if all the scattered parts are counted, storage slots. The instant the engineer begins to move it is possible to make a box out of wood which holds 16 slots. Eventually the car, as well as the tank and spidertron, can be built with 80 slots of storage. 5, or 12, for the whole ship? Preposterous!

WUBE seems to like a sequence of numbers which looks suspiciously like primes. the chests, and vehicles, have storage in steps of 16; 1 for the wooden chest, 2 for the iron chest, 3 for the steel chest, 5 for the vehicles. The next prime is 7, so the ship is set with 7 sets of 16, 112 slots.

Usage

Download the mod from the portal. Turning it on. Done. At the start of a new game everything will be done for you. There are no settings or options to deal with. When added to an existing game only the modifications to the crashed ship, excluding the indestructable feature, apply, and only if they ship is still on the map. If the ship have been removed, nothing will happen at all.

Removal

The mod can be removed from a save file, with side effects. All changes to the crashed ship are reverted, including the storage size returning to 5 slots. If the game was started with the mod, the Scout buggy is also removed. All inventory in the extra slots of the ship and in the trunk of the buggy are vaporized. If the save has the character in the buggy, on restart the engineer will be afoot, and stranded where the buggy was. If the game was started with the mod, and the chest was created, the chest will remain, merely reverting to standard behavior; no filters, minable and destructable.

Issues

I don't play in multiplayer so there is no way for me to test this in that environment. I have no idea what might happen in MP where each player has the mod and each is trying to modify the ship. MP use is, therefore, completely an on-your-won adventure.

Note

This mod grew from my Gypsy Companions mod when I realized that two different things, even if both involve the startup settings, don't belong in the same mod.

AI Usage
