I added/changed/removed some features to the badlands mod. (https://mods.factorio.com/mod/the-badlands)

1) Bug generation is now unaffected by the mod. Bugs will spawn anywhere with any mod as if Badlands is not installed. So there will be way more biters (the base mod only had scattered bugs that were completely non threatening)
2) Oil is no longer given in the starting area, you have to go find it.
3) Ore is now generated in ellipses instead of squares. Squares looked out of place and unnatural.
4) Bug Fix: If you start with the mod, then disable it, then run it without the mod, then reenable the mod, your starting area resources are not regenerated. (this was a problem when sharing world saves)

Badlands makes it very difficult to find the limited resources, and necessitates an expansive train network and tight resource control. I found this scenario very challenging and fun. But the lack of enemies made me dig into the code and insure I would get the bug siege I desired.
