this mod is beautiful, but i wish for a simpler thing that just uses the existing research queue; if the current research is being researched by 0 labs, and there exists a lab with the science packs for another research in the queue, switch to that research

That's possible, I guess, but a bit besides the scope of this mod. Post your request in a mod request subforum, someone might make it.

There are several mods that can do that, including Auto Research, Auto-Switch Techs, and Research Control Combinator. I've personally tried both of the first two before settling on Parallel Research.
