Yes, the returning landfill items hadn't been implemented in 1.0.1 (see the changelog entry for 1.0.2). I'm not saying that such a setting shouldn't be added, just offering you an immediate and working solution to your problem :)
I actually like this idea, if I get time I'll try to add it.
Should be working in latest version. Defaults to true.
