Neat mod, I have been waiting for somebody to implement this! From the source, it looks like this is a "Pipe" entity wearing a special graphical hat.

You are exactly right, the mod is based on pipes, programmatically, with a custom connection filter and custom graphics.

I had planned on using this mod as part of my work in progress (hint: sending plasma directly to new drills to mine a new ore) but decided to just package it separately. Enjoy ;)
