Hey, I really like the mod concept. Always thought this would make much more sense, like what engine doesn't need lube?
However, after a test, I find this pushes the cars and trains way too far down the tech tree that it makes the beginning exploration and fighting of biters tricky and slow. I can understand why the devs made it the way it is. I had to install this mod AFTER I researched them.
As an idea, could you not make normal engines require crude oil instead? I don't think that is too far from the mods idea and it still makes a lot of sense. Plus it keeps the engines early in the game so cars/trains are acquired earlier since it only needs pumpjacks (Oil Gathering) to be researched? Blue science then stays the same, or perhaps you could put in a setting to have blue science use oil instead of engines (I like that idea!! as you said "makes the more chemical") Then all the techs which require engines stay up the tech tree, trainworlds would suffer far less.
Makes engines use oil (engine/motor oil) and electric engine units use lube (bearing grease) per se.
