I'm a beginner in image editing, so my approach is definitely not ideal.
I used Nano Banana with Google Gemini (AI) to edit the Factorio steel furnace. I removed the chimney and added a few electrical wires instead. Then I fine-tuned the new design manually using an image editing program (Paint .Net). Finally, I edited the shadows and working animations. All with these free tools. That's enough for smaller mods like this. If you want to create larger mods, you may need more professional tools.
