Cars and tanks will automatically snap to one of the 8 major directions if within a few degrees.

Vanilla only has 8 directions though. This is 16

Does anybody know, how to enable/configure this in vanilla?
AFAICT it only snaps to the angle if off by less than ~2°, if at all.

I didn't notice any snapping ingame myself. There is a new driving mode though that lets you say press W and it will turn and drive car upwards. That is not the same as this mod at all and i don't think i'd easily get used to it.

That’s cardinal. Snapping is the other driving mode.

It’s definitely in there, made it really easy to drive straight north south east and west.

I see, it is definitely there but i won't call it a replacer for this mod with just that :D It is still like using VehicleSnap with 100+ angles instead of default 16 or 8 directions. As i was driving car at max speed and trying to go straight i was just making S-curves along the railroad.

I can't live without 16 snap

I adore 32 snap, it feels fluid while not pushing you into some direction you dont want (with 16 I often felt that snap denying my smoll angle adjustment)
