If you have the opportunity - will it be possible to constantly change the distance of the image, according to the current distance from the player's perspective?
Hm... I do not know if I can read the camera distance (zoom factor) from the game. I'll need to check the Facotrio API.
But if you keep on zooming in and out, the timelapse (most likely) will be very 'jittery' as it tried to zoom in/out on a slower/different pace. Especially when 'smooth camera' is disabled
Perhaps it was then that I went into the sendbox and my surface changed. It's hard to say.
Yes the tracker (and thus camera) will not follow you to other surfaces (I do not know about 'sandbox' but it sounds like a different surface), as the timelapse would have a 'gap' (jumps from one surface to another). I would expect that the camera will continue following you when you are back on Nauvis.
In your situation, it seems to be best to setup 2 trackers/cameras, one for each surface and both can have their own tracker(s) setup. In this way the timelapse will more 'continuous'. Especially if you setup a nice transition with the software you use to make the final movie.
But, when you build something the Player tracker will stop following you for sure (this is how it works at the moment).
I could make changes to the player tracker so it will continue following your character, even when you build, but it feels like you would be much better off with just grabbing your screen (e.g. using OBS) that using the in-game screenshot render functionality.
