As it says in the description, you can't take off from sand (yellow underground), only from concrete or earth/grass (brown/green).
I personally don't like that change though, the need to take off and land was exactly perfect balancing, now it's more annoying than useful. I didn't like the airplane mod because it was too powerful, but I might consider switching back now.
