Orbital Ion Cannon — Space Exploration Edition
Build a giant ion cannon, put it into orbit with a rocket and call down the thunder on those pesky biters. Inspired by the GDI ion cannons from Command & Conquer.
Version 4.0 is a complete rewrite for Factorio 2.0, built on Supercheese's original Orbital Ion Cannon (MIT). It plays differently from the 3.x versions, see Upgrading from 3.x below.
How it works
- Research Orbital ion cannon, craft a cannon and load it into a rocket silo. Launch it into orbit.
- The cannon stays in orbit of the planet it was launched from and can only fire at that planet. Every planet or moon builds its own arsenal.
- Take the Ion cannon targeting device from the shortcut bar and click (or drag) on a target: on the ground, on the map or in remote view.
- A target marker appears, the klaxon sounds, and after a short heat-up (about 7 seconds) the beam hits.
Each cannon has its own cooldown. A freshly launched cannon starts on cooldown too.
Targeting range and the Orbital uplink
The targeting device reaches 100 tiles around you (configurable). Build a powered Orbital uplink on a planet and the device reaches the whole planet, its orbit included. The uplink also works as a radar.
Auto-targeting
Research Ion cannon auto-targeting and your radars designate enemy nests while they scan. New nests appearing inside always-visible radar coverage get hit as well. You can keep a number of cannons per planet in reserve for manual shots, and choose whether worms are targeted.
Ion cannon window
Press I (or the button at the top) to see your cannons per planet: how many are in orbit, how many are ready and when the next one will be. Admins can switch auto-targeting off, block players from firing and, with the cheat setting on, add or remove cannons for free.
Announcer
Choose the original Command & Conquer EVA, or the Tiberian Sun EVA or CABAL. Voices and klaxon can be turned off per player.
Compatibility
- Factorio 2.0, with or without Space Age. A space platform counts as the planet it is parked at, but cannot be targeted itself.
- Space Exploration 0.7: an orbit counts as its planet or moon. Deploy cannons with a rocket silo on the planet or moon you want covered. SE cargo rockets deliver the cannon as an item.
- Pods sent to a space platform or a landing pad also just deliver the cannon as an item; only a launch into orbit deploys it.
Upgrading from 3.x
- Cannons in orbit from 3.x saves are not carried over.
- Placed cannons and the MK2 cannon / MK2 targeter no longer exist and are removed when the save loads. Pick them up before updating.
- Saves from the original Orbital Ion Cannon 1.x keep their cannons.
Settings
Blast radius, laser and explosion damage, blast flames, cooldown, heat-up, targeting range, auto-targeting, worms, reserved cannons, map marker duration, admin cheat buttons, announcer voice, klaxon, alerts.
For modders
The orbital_ion_cannon remote interface of the original mod is kept: on_ion_cannon_targeted / on_ion_cannon_fired events and target_ion_cannon(force, position, surface, player), plus get_status(force).
