No Starter Base Allowed

"Don't worry guys. It's built wrong because this isn't the real base. It's just the starter base..."

This mod was made in jest. There's a saying that makes the rounds in some Factorio circles. If a base doesn't have lights and concrete, it's not a real base. We all say we're going to make the real base eventually, but let's be honest with ourselves. None of us have the discipline to make a real base. Every base is just the next starter base. Well not anymore. With this mod, any base you make is a real base.

What does this mod actually do?

Simple. It has two main features:
1. Most buildings must have some sort of foundation, be it stone, concrete, or refined concrete. More advanced buildings require stronger foundations.
2. Night is permanent, and darker. If you don't place lamps down you're gonna have a bad time.

  • These features are toggle-able independent of each other. If you don't like one you can turn it off.
  • Solar panels have been replaced with "wind generators" and have been restricted to environments with an atmosphere. You can't have solar in the dark.
  • Portable solar panels have been replaced with "wind spinners". Because why not.
  • Solar panels still exist in the Space tab of the crafting menu and are restricted to space platforms. There's no wind in space.
  • There's an option to make flashlights and vehicle lights brighter.
  • You can change how dark the game gets on a per-planet basis. If you make it pitch-black I'd recommend adding mods that give you more lighting tools.

Known Issues

  • I'm not an artist. Wind generators still use the solar panel graphics.
  • Every planet is now like Aquilo, requiring force build to paste ghosts and blueprints. Factorio saves something like a "preferred foundation" when using force build. This "preferred foundation" is whatever foundation type you used last on that tile type. That's how the game decides to use either concrete or refined concrete on Aquilo when force building. Unfortunately, this means if you've never placed a foundation type down on a tile type, the game won't let you paste a ghost on that tile type. It doesn't know what you want to put under it. This isn't so bad in practice. You just have to put down a foundation manually the first time for each tile type. However, with how many tile variations there are, it will catch you off guard every once in a while, especially when using something like Alien Biomes.
  • Force building over water is broken. You can do it in two phases where you put the landfill ghost down first and then the building ghost. Unfortunately, the building ghost is deleted when placing the landfill, forcing you to wait for the landfill phase to complete before re-pasting the blueprint. A bit reminiscent of 1.1.
  • If you migrate from a save that didn't require refined concrete, and thaw a frozen building on Aquilo that now requires refined concrete, the building will disappear if it doesn't have refined concrete under it when thawing.
  • You can't pick up concrete underneath trees. You have to chop the trees down first.

Would I Recommend This Mod?

No. This mod is a meme mod. I played it with a friend on death world for a laugh. The joke wore off pretty quick. It stops being funny the 30th time you forget to bring concrete with you to repair a wall or build an outpost. Building things before bots is extra annoying. Launching concrete into space makes bootstrapping new planets more annoying. Is it just me or does the 2.0+ map generation have less stone? Taking out biter nests in the dark strains your eyes. Turret creeping is a pain because you need to build concrete under your turrets.

That being said, am I a more disciplined Factorio engineer now? Well I don't forgot to build concrete anymore and I feel uncomfortable with builds that don't have lights. So maybe.
