When mining (you or a bot) connected objects you get back the wires that were connected to it.
You will get wires back even if you disconnect entities manually or use Shift-left click to remove wires from electric poles!
The crux: no more free wires when building via blueprint! When placing a blueprint, bots have to deliver the wires before connecting.

The same with copper cables?

Yes, it's possible! Just activate it in the settings. When building electric poles, you need to have copper cables in your inventory, otherwise they will be requested from the logistic network.
As of 1.1.89, the feature is fully compatible with power switches.

Compatibilities

  • Works with the remote view in Space Exploration. If you connect entities using the "free" wires, they will be requested before connecting.
  • Factorio developers announced changes regarding wires in Factorio 2.0. For now it doesn't seem too heavy to handle them
