g linked-chest

please make support for 1.1s linked chest for cross surface logistics.

The linked chest looks interesting as something usable by mods, but I don't see it providing any significant improvements for Factorissimo specifically.

Chest connections are already so UPS efficient that linked chests would just add a bunch of complexity and issues, since they do not have any logistics capacity and managing link IDs would be a huge hassle. What would happen if you have four linked chests that have the same ID due to how the factory buildings are built, and you pick up a single factory building or a chest? What happens if you have a full chest outside and a full chest inside a factory building, then place it down such that the chests link up?

This minor UPS improvement really does not seem worth the huge effort of trying to trick linked chests into acting like chest connections given all the edge cases that are involved. I may reconsider this if linked belts or linked pipes are added to Factorio.

1.1.6 added linked-belts. The next will probably be the linked-pipe. May you reconsider them?

the thing is, any kind of reduction in on_tick code makes the game run faster at megabase scale.

maybe some kind of UI could be added to manage all links so that stale connections can be removed, or remapped - I am not sure how you want to implement it, but we can help you come up with ideas.

I don't think it's a minor UPS improvement, especially at the point where you've got so many Factorissimo buildings running that they start re-using surfaces.

I'll definitely be using linked-belts.

the other thing is that i don't believe linked-chests will preclude the use of logistic chests. currently you have to manage the relation between inside and outside connections anyway so i don't think that's going to be a major change in how the mod works for linked-chests to be there, it's simply going to be another type of entity that you scan for when the connection is formed.

call it a Factory Linked Chest, require it be placed next to a building or on a factory connection tile, placement will be invalidated and the chest given back to player. as i understand it, it's like a hard link on a filesystem, the link id is essentially an inventory id. doesn't matter if you pick up all of the chests, if they're reassigned the same ID, they get the inventory back.

space exploration is using linked-chests as Arcosphere Chests for end-game teleportation.
