Due to it being impossible to see if an item has a description from the lua end, that mod can't know if it should overwrite the description or include the existing one in it's extension.
Can you give your items a localized_description parameter?

That really sounds like an issue with that mod (Too). It should have a default that it goes to anyway, not be reliant on other mods to do something specific.

If it tries to access the string anyway, it can end up showing a missing string message.
And there is no way for a mod to check if the string exists.
